How To Wear Skirts With Tights – 10 Ways

As the winter months roll in, most of us gals become more conservative with our style, and it’s no surprise, especially if you live in a cooler climate.

How to Wear Skirts With Tights

But winter is one of the most underrated seasons (along with Autumn) for making a fashion that says “I’m gonna look fabulous despite the freezing cold weather!”

So here are our 10 favorite ways to wear a skirt with tights for those chilly winter days.

How To Wear Skirts With Tights

Before we get started, the overall arching theme you want to approach this style with is wearing skirts with tights to try and match the tights with the skirt that falls in the same color palette.

Then you want to match the skirt color with your footwear to complete the look.

Whilst this sounds easy, on paper it can be quite challenging as skirts come in a lot of different shapes and sizes.

Another great tip is to add layering to your outfits. This one trick can make a basic wardrobe more versatile so you don’t have to spend a lot of dollars on multiple items of clothing.

It also means you can re-wear your favorite top or skirt with different styles in different seasons so they won’t have to gather dust!

1. White Skirt With Black Tights

Our first look is a basic white skirt with black tights. To make this look even better, you can add a white button shirt, black sweater, white bag, and some black ankle boots.

If you’re feeling brave you can even add some fake skin tights to give the illusion that you’re rocking bare skin, when in reality you’re completely covered up from foot to hips.

We absolutely adore this look, and it falls somewhere in between a relaxed trip to the mall, and casual-formal attire for a weekend vibe. And you can remove the top should you want to dress the outfit up ever-so-slightly.

2. Black All The Way To The Waist With White Top

Sticking with the basic theme, we’ve gone with another monochrome look. This time, however, we’ve paired a black skirt with a white top.

You can layer this one up by adding a thick white coat, or white blazer if you really want to jazz up the look.

For the legs, we’ve gone with straight black tights and a flowy skirt that allows for more breathability.

Even in the winter months, it can still become overwhelming to wear a lot of layers, especially tighter fitting clothes, and so a looser fitting skirt gives you enough protection from the elements without working up a sweat. Definitely a sophisticated by feminine look.

3. Turtleneck Zebra Skirt

Are you looking for a super smart but sexy outfit that would fit most occasions?

Try the turtleneck approach. The gray turtleneck gives plenty of protection from the elements with a zebra print skirt that pulls the eyes towards the midline.

We’d finish this look off with a simple pair of tights and some black over-the-knee boots.

This outfit is a perfect choice for those that want something that isn’t too warm, but also not too light that it won’t keep you warm.

This would be best for the Autumn months when the temperature is just about to change.

4. Lady In Red

If there are two colors that complement each other and most women can rock, it’s black and red. You can pair a short red denim skirt with black tights, go with a red cropped top and a red bag.

This outfit screams mysterious but deadly; almost like an outfit that a superheroine would wear for a disguise.

This outfit looks best when it is kept super simple and you don’t overcomplicate things, as too many things that are going on will draw the eyes all over the place.

So we recommend you stick with two colors maximum and avoid adding in more layers.

5. Maroon Skirt

If the red skirt look was a bit much for you, and you are looking for something that isn’t as loud, then a more conservative color like maroon might best suit your look.

A maroon skirt with a long sleeve black top is a great combination and doesn’t take long to put together, which makes it ideal if you are heading out for errands or a quick trip to the local Starbucks.

The great thing about this combination is that you can add extra accessories like a scarf and matching gloves, which are practical add-ons for extra cold weather time.

Don’t be afraid to rock a beanie, as long as you keep the colors to a minimum and don’t overdo it.

6. Midi Skirt (Formal)

We often get asked if you can wear a midi skirt with tights in colder times of the year, and the answer is a resounding yes. And you can do it without losing a cent of sophistication.

Tights will look amazing as long as the color of the skirt and thighs complement each other, then you’re good to go.

We find that having a black element in the skirt works well, and you can choose a number of patterns, from floral, to monochrome.

Pair this with a solid color top, i.e. white or black and you’ve got an eye-catching outfit.

7. Black Patterned Midi Skirt (Nude Tights)

So far we’ve explored all the options that a pair of black tights can provide. But what if you want to mix things up?

We know that not everyone wants to wear black tights all of the time, so branching out and trying an array of colors is a great way to push the boundaries of your outfit and push you out of your comfort zone.

We like nude tights as an option, and these can go great with a black patterned midi skirt or any other style of skirt with hints of black. So feel free to explore skirts that feature a wide range of colors.

8. Midi Skirt (Casual)

Having looked at some formal outfits for rocking a midi skirt in winter, we’ve often been asked if you can go a bit more dressed down. Well, fear not, as midi’s look just as chic in a more toned-down setting or situation.

What a lot of our audience love about this is combining two worlds together, so you can wear your favorite throw-on top without fear of a fashion faux pas.

We like to pair a midi skirt and tights with a relaxed top or T-shirt. Graphic tees or a cropped jumper work well here.

Try to keep the color scheme as basic as possible, and if you’re struggling for ideas then try black tights, a floral skirt, with a black tee.

9. Denim Skirt

Denim skirts can be super versatile and are probably one of the most common items of clothing in a woman’s wardrobe.

Although often considered a summer essential, don’t be pigeonholed into thinking they won’t work well in the Autumn or winter.

Your best bet for rocking a denim skirt is to opt for a skirt with a darker wash. Colors like indigo, dark purple, and even classic denim blue are simple choices you can opt for.

To enhance the look you can also pair your denim skirt and tights with black accessories like a belt and black ankle boots or heels.

10. Pencil Skirt

Our last option is to wear an office skirt such as a pencil skirt. When going with this option make sure to keep the look as professional as you can.

You don’t need to deviate too much from the basic black, white, and gray colors, as overdoing it will look try-hard. Black tights are a great choice with a black pencil skirt, heels, and top.

If you want to push past the base color we mentioned above, then do this with the top and leave the bottom half alone.

There’s no real limitation to what you can try, but we particularly like a deep red, cream, or light blue.

Final Thoughts

Wearing skirts with tights doesn’t have to be complicated, and finding the ultimate combination can be a fun experience.

As long as you follow our guide above you will never have to worry about this classic combination again.

Learning what works with what is the first step in your fashion journey. But don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, as this is often where the magic happens with style.
